How to Choose the Best Treadmill for Your Lifestyle
March 20, 2007
When choosing a treadmill (or any piece of exercise equipment for that matter), there is a lot to consider. Many people tend to look at the price first, but you don’t want to be a slave to a price.
When you’re buying a car or house, you don’t just look at the price; you consider durability and functionality (car) and location, schools, neighborhoods, etc. (house). You’ll want to put the same effort in choosing your treadmill - it’s just as important a decision. After all, your health is important to you, right?
Of course, first you’ll need to think about several things before choosing a treadmill such as size, manual or motorized, how much use will it need to withstand, and maintenance issues.
If space is an issue, you may want to choose a model that folds for storage. There are several models that fold for storage these days.
If your treadmill is going to get lots of use from you and your whole family, obviously you’ll want to invest more for a sturdier model. This means a heavier motor and more cushioning. Be sure to pay attention to construction also, which may be shoddy in the cheapest models.
COMBATIVES? …… Don?t Tell Me. I Know What That Is! (Part 1)
March 20, 2007
"Combatives" from the root word COMBAT ? "to fight in direct contact", "active fighting between enemies", "any fight or struggle".
Well, let’s see??????..There is ONE singular glaring absence in the above definition. Notice it? Absolutely NO mention of Fairbairn, Applegate, or Coach Hanley. No mention of Jiu-Jitsu, Boxing, Savate or any member of the Gracie family. No mention of World War Two, the Punic Wars or the Spartans. No mention of Juji-Gatame, a smashing overhand right, an edge of hand blow, or even a good old kick in the butt!
Get it? THERE ARE NO SPECIFICS that define what is or isn’t so-called "COMBATIVES"! So why do so many people feel such an overriding need to "define" combatives into a narrow scope of limited methodology? "I know what you do"???????.."That Fairbairn stuff". A month ago this same guy thought FAIRBAIRN was simply a decent suntan. "Yea, I base my combatives on Applegate"?????..six months ago this dude thought Applegate was the entrance to an orchard! Everybody’s an "expert". At what exactly? I’m not sure even "they" really know.
Getting Your Pro Golf Swing Right
March 19, 2007
Achieving a correct pro golf swing will not only help any golfer improve their game, but even more important, will help them enjoy their golf game much more.
As many golfers delve deeper into increasingly desperate efforts to improve their game, it is very easy for any golfer to lose the enjoyment aspect. Some have even given up the game because of this.
Getting your pro golf swing right will involve you focusing on the many different individual parts of the pro golf swing.
The pro golf swing starts with the backswing where equal focus should be placed on both the body rotation and club and arm extension. It should be a fluid and smooth one-piece motion with the front elbow kept as straight as possible.
In the pro golf swing, the downswing, which is the next stage, begins in the legs and hips. You should begin transferring your body weight from back to front by moving forward the knees, and then the thighs and hips.
In the final pro golf swing stage of impact and follow through, the body weight should be on the outside of the forward heel and the inside of the rear foot. The heel of the back foot should be raised slightly with the back knee also slightly bent inwards.
Build 80 Pounds Of Muscle?
March 19, 2007
Is it possible to gain 80 pounds of shredded muscle without Steroids? Yes, but very difficult. A realistic goal for packing on muscle would be 7lbs/year….yes, 7lbs/year-without steroids. Arnold in his day (late 70’s early 80’s) weight around 240lbs ripped up at a height of 6′2″. So if you weight 190lbs for example and you are around the same height, it could take you up to 7-8 years to get in that kind of shape.
However if you are shorter, say around 5′8″-5′10″ you can actually “look” just as big with less muscle gains. A guy who’s 5′9″ 215lbs looks every bit as big as a guy who’s 6′2″ 240 in terms of muscle bulk. So the taller you are the more time it is going to take. The good thing is when you do it without steroids the muscle you gain is really your, so you keep most of it when and if you stop lifting. Another cool thing is you will get a lot stronger and harder before you really start growing. So you will FEEL great before you actually LOOK great.
One other factor, it also depends on a person’s body type. There are 3 basic ones:
After WLS: Walking for Wellness
March 18, 2007
Step for step, mile for mile, walking is the best cardiovascular activity you can include as part of your weight loss surgery success story. Walking is easy, accessible, inexpensive, individual and effective. It is the gold-star sport for real people with real lives. Formerly stigmatized as cheap transportation and a senior citizens’ sport it is now a credible and fashionable form of exercise. And it’s been around for a long time ? anthropoids stood upright and put one foot in front of the other thousands of years ago and we haven’t looked back since.
Now validated, as a vigorous fitness activity walking has become America’s most popular physical activity with over 20-million people stepping out regularly. Studies abound touting the benefits of walking: including weight loss, lowered risk of stroke or heart disease and improved mental well-being. While it may sound trite, 30-minutes of walking a day will keep the doctor away.
Be sure to record your walking activity beginning on the very first day. Find a notebook, a journal, or a computer program where you can record your time and distance each day. This may sound silly the first week when you are taking 5-minute walks, but very soon you will rejoice at your progress if you have a record of where you began.
Secrets of Teaching Yoga
March 18, 2007
What you are about to read applies to teaching, in general. In fact, we are all teachers, to some degree. You teach your friends, co-workers, strangers and family members on a daily basis.
The example you set teaches someone in some way. Whether you are a positive role model, or not, people, and the world, react to you. Sorry to say, you have more responsibility than you thought possible.
Do you realize that when you hurt one person, it will set a chain of events into motion? Even worse is that, most violent acts were stimulated by smaller, seemingly unimportant events.
When you talk to your students, always show mutual respect. Don’t take advantage of your position as a Yoga teacher to temporarily feed your ego.
The first thing a Yoga teacher should instill, in his or her students, is self-motivation. The serious Yoga student must be a self starter. This is a person who practices Yoga at home, as well as in class. They don’t depend on their friends to come to class, and they show up like "clockwork."
How can you make your Yoga students become self motivators?
How Power Play Golf Fitness Has Changed The Game
March 17, 2007
The sensational entry into the game by legendary golfer Tiger Woods, at the tender age of 20, introduced power play golf fitness into a game that had traditionally been looked at as a leisure sport where technique was much more important and necessary than any physical fitness or strength.
Never before had the world witnessed such a physically fit golfer playing at the highest levels of the game.
Research has produced some amazing revelations about Tiger Woods and power play golf fitness.
For example it is widely known that golfers can generally achieve a club head speed of 100 M.P.H. at the bottom of their swing. Research however shows that Tiger Woods can reach up to 125 M.P.H. Little wonder that he is able to achieve those amazing distances with his drives.
Apart from the technique employed, fitness and the correct conditioning of the muscles plays a huge role. This is one of the reasons why many professionals also wishing to enjoy the benefits of power play golf fitness have taken to physical work-outs and strength training.
But how effective is strength training in improving a golfer’s game? In other words how effective is power play golf fitness?
5 Questions You Should Ask Before Purchasing a Treadmill
March 17, 2007
With the advancement in the treadmill industry, quality machines could now cost you up to $5,000. So purchasing the wrong equipment could prove costly. And with the huge variety of treadmills in the market today, finding one that suits you best has become even more confusing.
This is the reason why I created these guide questions. It aims to educate people on how to purchase the best treadmill for their needs and avoid some costly mistakes.
So before you start shopping for your new treadmill, answer first the following guide questions below. They will guide you into making the right purchase.
1) Who would use the treadmill?
The treadmill you would be buying would depend on how much you weigh, how tall you are, and how many people would use it.
Most treadmills have a maximum user weight limit, so be sure that your treadmill will be able to support your body weight. For tall people, I suggest you choose machines with lengthy decks, since your strides will be longer than normal.
If the whole family would be using it, it would be better to buy higher quality treadmills (those above $2,000) to make sure that it can handle the workouts of everyone in the family.
