Weight Lifting 101
May 21, 2007
WHY WEIGHT LIFTING?
What’s the one thing that you can do to lose weight, re-shape your body, improve muscle tone, become stronger, fight off osteoporosis, lower blood pressure, etc.?
Weight Lifting! Or as it’s also called, Strength Training!
For the rest of this book I will refer to the art of weight lifting as strength training. One of the reasons a lot of people don’t lift weights is because they are intimidated by the word weight lifting.
It amazes me to see how many people avoid lifting weights for one reason or another.
Let me make sure you are clear of one very important fact.
LIFTING WEIGHTS IS ONE OF THE BEST, IF NOT THE BEST THING YOU CAN DO FOR YOUR OVERALL HEALTH!!!
Let’s jump right in and start off by covering exactly “what” strength training is.
It’s actually very simple. Strength training or weight lifting is the lifting of heavy weights and/or resistance in a prescribed manner as an exercise or in athletic competition.
Notice I said weights and/or resistance. It doesn’t have to necessarily be a weight plate or a dumbbell. We’ll get into that more later.
Why A Modern Golf Training System Is So Effective
May 20, 2007
Gone are the days when a golf training system mainly involved going over to the course and practicing your swing. This was hardly effective and for many unprepared golfers in poor physical condition often led to injury.
These days golf training systems have become more sophisticated and the key objective is to get results. Modern golf training systems usually involve golf-specific exercises designed to strengthen muscles that are used in the game.
Modern golf training systems also incorporate the use of exercise machines and equipment. The most effective of this seek to strengthen particular muscles and parts of the body that are critical to golf.
Stretching exercises are also important in any good golf training system. The right stretch exercises, sometimes incorporating the use of dumbbells, can help dramatically improve a golf swing and the distance of the drive on the course.
And stretching exercises do not have to be limited to the gym or exercise area. There are a number of stretch exercises that can be performed in the office, even while still seated on your chair. These have proved to be especially useful with many amateur golfers who hardly seem able to find the time to play golf, let alone spare a few hours at a crowded gym.
Strategies for Alleviating the Boredom Associated with Exercise
May 20, 2007
Just about every expert in the ADD field will tell you that exercise is one of the best ADD management strategies there is. According to the book Delivered from Distraction:
“When a person exercises, she sets in motion a cascade of events that her brain loves. She sends more blood to her brain. With more blood comes more oxygen. Exercise also stimulates the release of a plethora of nutrients, hormones, chemical precursors of neurotransmitters, growth factors and cleansing agents that bathe the brain in precisely what it needs to function at its best.”
From Delivered from Distraction by Edward Hallowell, M.D. and John Ratey, M.D. Copyright 2005. Page 219.
And in addition to the health and focus benefits, exercise feels good. So why don’t we do it more?
For many adults with ADD, the answer to that question is “boredom”. When exercise becomes boring for an ADDer, it becomes something to avoid.
Here are 4 strategies for alleviating the boredom associated with exercise:
1. Get out of the Gym
Many ADDers join gyms with a lot of excitement, only to find that their enthusiasm wears out quickly. Being on a stationary bike, treadmill, or stair climber for 30 minutes begins to seem like torture after a while.
Dramatic Effect Of A Stretching Exercise For Golf
May 19, 2007
A stretching exercise for golf is capable of revolutionizing the quality of any individuals’ game. In fact there is no single genuine golf exercise program that does not include stretching exercises. That is how critical stretching exercises for golf are.
Actually there are many types of stretching exercises for golf. Some of them can comfortably be done in the office while you are still seated on your chair in your workstation. And probably when you have a few minutes to spare or you need to spend a moment or two thinking about something, maybe a decision you have to make. You can easily do your thinking as you execute the simple stretch exercises.
One of the exercises that can be done in this situation is twisting your upper body to reach and touch as far back on one side of the chair as you can. This stretching exercise for golf should be repeated reaching out for the other side of your chair.
There are also stretching exercises for golf that should be done with dumbbells. Others are done using a medicine ball. Most of them are described in my other golf exercise articles.
The Baby Boomer Athlete
May 19, 2007
Are you a Baby Boomer? If you were born between the years of 1946 to 1964, you are part of the 79.1 million Boomers, comprising 29 percent of the total US population. According to the AARP, every seven seconds a Baby Boomer turns 50! And, about one-third of Americans who take part in sports activities are Boomers.
As this generation grows older, they are working harder to keep their youth and vitality, are staying active with physical activity, and unfortunately are experiencing more injuries than the generation before them.
A US Consumer Product Safety Commission report states there were 1 million sports injuries to persons between the ages of 35 and 54 in 1998. This is a 33% increase over the same statistics of 1991. While this sounds like distressing news for aging bodies, many sports-related injuries are minor aches, sprains and strains that can be treated or even prevented using self-treatment techniques. Whether you are a weekend warrior or a lifelong athlete, the following suggestions may help you stay limber and relatively pain-free.
Warm-up before stretching or an activity. Muscles that are warm through slow-paced pre-exercise such as jogging or walking, will be less likely to tear.

The basic models offer a heart rate monitor, four programmed workouts and cushioned deck, while the more advanced treadmills offer iFIT capability. This technology allows the user to run workouts from the internet, compact discs, and video. The motor is not as powerful as most brands, and only runs at a maximum of 1.75 horsepower. However, for the beginner to moderate user, this speed is perfect for standard workouts.
An Effective Golf Swing Exercise
May 18, 2007
There are many types of effective golf swing exercises. Golf swing exercise is very important because the golf swing is at the very heart of the golf game.
It is actually impossible to play a good game of golf without being able to execute an effective golf swing.
The other reason why golf swing exercise is so important is in the fact that a golf swing by its’ very nature is a very unnatural and awkward movement of the body and muscles.
It therefore stands to reason that the body will usually resist the golf swing action and this is why it appears to be so difficult to master.
However when you use golf swing exercises to strengthen and condition the relevant muscles, the golf swing becomes less awkward to the body.
Let us now take a closer look at the movements involved in a golf swing so that we come up with the most effective golf swing exercise that will impact most dramatically on the quality of your game.
Toning Your Abs - Common Exercising Myths
May 17, 2007
1. The ‘Chew Then Crunch’ Myth
Crunches are good exercises for toning the abs and stomach if done properly and combined with a low fat diet. However many people think they can continue to eat what they want and end their day with 100 crunches to “work off” all the bad stuff they put in their body throughout the day.
If you’re not lowering your fat intake by watching what you eat, it doesn’t matter how many exercises and crunches you perform. Not only will you see zero results, but you may actually see your stomach increase in size!
This is because you’re building muscle on top of the existing fat. We all have flat stomachs, it’s just that for some of us have layers and layers of fat on top of that muscle we must get rid of first.
You’ve got to work off that existing fat first by training and toning your abs and stomach area.
I had this problem when I first started exercising. I didn’t lower my caloric or fat intake much but I started doing crunches. For three months straight I did my 8-minute ab routine like clockwork. I couldn’t understand why I wasn’t seeing results. In fact, my stomach started protruding even more.
Flexibility For Golf Will Not Be Lost With Weight Training
May 17, 2007
There is no doubt that body flexibility is extremely important for golf and to golfers. Little wonder that one of the biggest fears amongst many golfers looking to improve their game is that of losing their flexibility as a result of weight training that builds muscles and stretching exercises.
This is one of the reasons why many amateur golfers still avoid joining golf-specific exercise and conditioning programs. They mistakenly link every weight-training program with muscle building and bodybuilding.
Although it is true that muscle building and body building will tend to make somebody stiff, the facts are that weight training can either be used for body-building and building of muscles, or it can be used to build strength.
The golf specific weight training programs are aimed at building strength and endurance. Not muscles. A genuine golf exercise program will have nothing in its’ weight training routine to remotely relate it to muscle or bodybuilding.
In fact stronger and conditioned muscles will tend to dramatically improve flexibility for golf, rather than reduce it. Flabby, weak, unexercised muscles are the ones that will tend to be very stiff and over time will take away the flexibility for golf in anybody.
